SURREALIST PHOTO COLLAGES: PORTRAITS AND LANDSCAPES
After introductory lessons on Surrealism, Illusionist Art and the use of Space and Scale, students will create a Surrealist Photo Collage. Students will become familiar with the artwork of Salvador Dali, Rene Magritte, Giorgio De Chirico, Man Ray and Alberto Giacometti, as well as contemporary artist Thomas Barbey.
To accomplish this, students must consider the following in their work:
- Setting: Natural or Man-made
- Including elements of nature and everyday objects
- Placement of each image you include and documenting the sources of these images (original or borrowed under Fair Use)
- Composition: How have you put your piece together? Is there balance in your piece?
-The following elements of this piece:
1) the bizarre or strange
2) juxtaposition (combining objects/settings that would not typically be seen together or that are unrelated)
3) one object may morph or transform into another
4) exaggerate the scale of objects or backgrounds
