Stop Motion Animation
Stop motion animation is when a series of individual photographs are viewed in fast succession, giving the illusion that the object is moving on its own. A great introductory project is to give the students a point & shoot camera, a tripod and a toy with moving parts, such as a Hot Wheels, or a Barbie Doll.
As the students slowly move the object across the table they shoot over 100 photographs. The smaller the movement between photographs, the better. There should be no evidence of human existence, so if a hand accident appears in a photograph, do not stop to though it out, re-shoot and keep moving. For this introductory project it encourage the students to shoot at least 150 photographs in one class period. We know that a few will end up in the trash. The rate that they will appear in this movie is 10 photographs = 1 second. Students use the handout on this page to edit their movie in iMovie. The concept of stop motion animation is continued in other projects, such as, cut paper animation, claymation, inanimate objects coming to life, photobooth animation and shadow animation. |
